China halts military dialogue with US, suspends climate cooperation

China announced on Friday that it is halting cooperation with the United States in several areas, including communication between high-ranking military commands and dialogue on climate change, in response to a visit by US House Speaker Nancy. Pelosi, Taiwan this week.

In a statement, the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs listed eight actions with immediate effect, accusing Pelosi of disregarding “the strong opposition and serious representations of China”.

The Chinese government has decided to suspend cooperation with the US in the repatriation of illegal immigrants, legal assistance in criminal matters and the fight against drug trafficking. In addition, the Military Maritime Advisory Agreement meetings are cancelled, as are the Defense Policy Coordination dialogues.

Earlier, China announced sanctions against Pelosi and some of her relatives. The Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs called the US Chamber leader’s visit to Taiwan “provocative”.

“Despite China’s serious concerns and firm opposition, Pelosi insisted on visiting Taiwan, seriously interfering in Chinese internal affairs, undermining China’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, trampling on the ‘One China’ policy, and threatening the peace and stability of China. Taiwan Strait,” a ministry spokesman said in a statement.
