China has created a plant that turns carbon dioxide into environmentally friendly fuel

China has successfully completed trial operation and technology evaluation of a plant that will produce 1,000 tons of clean fuel from carbon dioxide per year.

The world’s first plant, developed by the Dalian Institute of Chemical Physics (DICP) and Zhuhai Futian Energy Technology, hydrogenates carbon dioxide into a clean fuel that can help reduce carbon dioxide in the atmosphere.

In a statement, DICP says that “a technology that can selectively produce value-added hydrocarbon fuels with high energy density will provide a new path to advance a clean and low-carbon energy revolution.”

Carbon dioxide hydrogenation technology for fuel production was proposed in 2017. This method uses metal catalysts to convert carbon dioxide into biofuels that are less harmful to the environment. The demonstration facility was built in Zoucheng Industrial Park in 2020. In October 2021, the plant passed a 72-hour test, during which it produced environmentally friendly fuel with an octane rating of over 90, which is in line with China’s national VI standard. At the same time, it consumed little electricity.

“This technology marks a new stage in CO2 in the world and provides a new strategy to achieve the goal of becoming carbon neutral,” said Professor Sun Jian from DICP.
