China has developed new submarine detection technology that promises to change warfare at sea

Scientists in China have developed a promising new technology for detecting submarines that promises to change the way war is fought at sea. According to interestingengineering.com, it is a large, square truck-like structure that uses antennas to detect very weak electromagnetic signals emitted by submarine propellers. In tests it successfully recognized low-frequency signals at a distance of almost 20 kilometers (12 miles). The device is equipped with instruments and batteries for long-term underwater operations and is attached to a surface buoy. Although primarily designed to detect submarines, the system can locate surface ships by recognizing the wakes of their propellers. The development was carried out by scientists from China’s Shanghai Jiao Tong University and tested in the depths of the South China Sea, at a time of rising tension in the region.
