Chinese scientists have installed the highest weather station in the world on Everest. It is located at an altitude of 8800 meters. Prior to this, the highest located meteorological station was installed by the American-British expedition in 2019 at an altitude of 8430 meters, also on Everest, on the southern slope.

The scientific expedition was organized by the Tibetan Plateau Research Institute of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, and included 13 people. Scientists also collected samples of ice and snow on the summit of Everest and measured their thickness using a special high-precision radar. All station equipment weighs about 50 kg, for lifting it was disassembled into its component parts.

In total, the project of Chinese scientists provides for the deployment of about a dozen such stations on Everest, including the one located at the top. Four have already been installed this year: at altitudes of 5200, 7028, 7790 and 8300 meters. In the past – three: at altitudes of 5400, 5800 and 6500 meters.

According to Chinese researchers, Everest is affected by global warming. Moreover, according to the hypothesis of scientists, the factors of temperature increase become even more noticeable in proportion to the increase in altitude above sea level. This hypothesis is based on the data that the researchers were able to obtain at altitudes up to 5000 m, since the previously necessary equipment was not enough up the slope of Everest. Eight new stations will collect information about wind speed, direction, and air humidity. In addition, with their help, scientists will receive much more information about the melting of glaciers at high altitudes.
