China presents greater stability and control over its internal order compared to the United States, according to analysis by historian Michel Gherman, professor of sociology at the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ).
“It has a colossal difference between the possibilities of change from the United States and the possibilities of stability of China. China has more control, has more stability and is more likely to maintain the order than the United States,” he said.
In participation in WW Special With William Waack, the historian outlined a worrying panorama about the political situation in the US, warning of signs of a possible flirting with fascist ideas.
The program sought to examine the influence of charismatic leaders on the current political scenario and over time.
Gherman points out that the United States seem to be undergoing a “destruction project” with few positive building possibilities. He points to a series of elements that he considers alarming in the American political scene.
“Dispute against globalism, conspiracy references, the idea of elite destruction and the replacement of this elite to another more linked elite, less linked to cosmopolitan references, the notion of a certain gamification of reality, the destruction of bureaucracy in the name, as it were, of a new project of country linked to the billionaires that are the great reference,” he said.
Political grammar similar to historical fascism
The historian goes beyond his analysis, drawing parallels between current political rhetoric in the US and historical movements of fascism. “It is a political grammar that looks a lot like the political grammar of historical fascism. And the reading that this political grammar does is that it is necessary to continue destruction,” warned Gherman.
A critical point highlighted by the teacher is the identification of “internal enemies”, a common tactic in authoritarian regimes. In this context, American universities have been the target of criticism and are accused of promoting a supposed “moral degeneration” of society.
Gherman also mentions the persistence of tensions related to the American Civil War, which occasionally emerge in political discourses of the new far right. This scenario, he said, contributes to a project based on fear and moral panic.
“This new far right has a project of fear, moral panic and destruction. I think here, fundamentally, has a difference with China,” he concluded.
