A Taiwanese television network has apologized for mistakenly broadcasting on Wednesday that China had invaded the country and that the Chinese military was on the outskirts of the capital, Taipei.
The news caused panic on the Internet, according to Bloomberg.
Chinese Television Systems, a television network partly owned by the Taiwanese government, published a headline – “super” at the bottom of the screen at 7 am local time, informing the public that Chinese forces had attacked various directions to New Taipei City.
“The city of New Taipei has been hit by a Chinese communist guided missile. Ships in the port of Taipei have exploded, causing damage to facilities,” the statement said. “Banqiao station is said to have been set on fire by explosives planted by special forces.”
The station apologized in a live broadcast a few hours later, explaining that the update had been produced for Taipei Fire Department disaster prevention video and was aired by mistake by a producer. The CTS said it was investigating the “grave negligence” and would punish members of staff responsible for the incident.
