China: Joint air patrols with Russia are not directed against any country

The Chinese Armed Forces announced on Wednesday that joint air patrols conducted Tuesday with Russia over the Sea of Japan, the East China Sea and the Western Pacific were not directed against any country.

According to Reuters, this joint exercise, the first after the Russian invasion of Ukraine, was part of the planned annual military exercises, the Chinese Ministry of Defense said on its website on Tuesday.

The exercises near the air defense zones of Japan and South Korea took place while Joe Biden was completing his trip to Asia. The US president’s statement that he would be willing to respond militarily to defend Taiwan in the event of a Chinese attack angered Beijing.

China and Russia, however, have carried out similar patrols in 2019, 2020 and 2021, but have also planned a new exercise in the second half of the year.
