China, kidnapped man finds his mother after 30 years thanks to a drawing

When he was 4 years old, Li Jingwei was kidnapped from the village where he was born, in Yunnan province, China. It was 1988 and a man had taken him away from his family to sell him to another. A tragic fate that unites many Chinese children born between the 1980s and 1990s when the obligation for families to not have more than one child, to avoid overcrowding. A policy abolished by the Chinese Supreme Court in 2013. But Li Jingwei has never forgotten the way to his home, the neighboring houses, the colors, even the trees and waterways.

It was this, together with the web, that allowed him to hug his mother again after 30 years. Inspired by a story similar to his own, that of Guo Xinzhen, who 24 years after the kidnapping, was found by his father Guo Gangtang who had never given up and crossed China on a motorbike to bring him home, Li Jingwei decided to draw his village on a piece of paper and to share it on social networks through Douyin, the TikTok of China.

“It’s been so many years, I don’t know if someone in my family is looking for me”Li said in the video posted on the Chinese video platform Douyin. “I want to be able to see my parents while I’m still here.”

Thanks to the many shares received, Li Jingwei’s design came under the eyes of the Chinese Ministry of Public Security, thus prompting him to start some investigations to help the man find his biological parents. And they succeeded. On December 28, the DNA tests carried out on a woman from Zhaotong, the original area of ​​Li Jingwei, confirmed that she was the man’s biological mother.

After a first video call, mom and son hugged in person on January 1st. “My mother and I have the same lips, even the same teeth”, said Li, who is now preparing to spend the Chinese New Year she had dreamed of for a lifetime: the one with her mother. In the following days, Li will go to visit her father’s grave in Yunnan.
