China’s video game regulator granted publishing licenses to 70 online games on Thursday, including titles owned by Tencent, NetEase and other developers.
Tencent, the world’s largest gaming company, has approved “Metal Slug: Awakening”, according to the list published by the National Press and Public Administration agency, in the company’s first license for a commercial game in a year and a half. .
Unlike most other countries, games need regulatory approvals before being released in China, which is also the world’s biggest electronic games market.
When Beijing clamped down on the industry last August, there was a nine-month freeze on the license approval process.
NetEase, China’s second-largest games company, received a license this month for the RPG titled “Journey to the West: Return”, its second approval since the freeze was lifted in April, as the company received one in September.
A subsidiary of Tencent also received a license in September, but it was for an educational game without monetization.
No licenses were granted in October, when the 20th Communist Party Congress was underway in Beijing.
Tencent President Martin Lau said on Thursday in a call with analysts that he expected the company to receive new licenses quickly.
