China: Missing tennis player Peng Shui will soon make a public appearance

Chinese tennis player Peng Shui is staying at home of her own free will, and will make a public appearance “soon”, said today the editor-in-chief of the Chinese newspaper Global Times Hu Xinjin.

China’s Peng Shui, a former No. 1 in the world in doubles, has not appeared or made a public statement since November 2, accusing former Deputy Prime Minister Zhang Gaoli in a social media post of forcing her to have sex.

Zhang and the Chinese government did not comment on the allegations. Peng’s post on social media was quickly deleted and the issue was excluded from discussions on the heavily censored internet in China.

“In the last few days, she has remained at home free and did not want to be disturbed. She will appear in public and take part in some activities soon,” Hu wrote in a Twitter post.

The Global Times is published by Laiki Imerisia, the official newspaper of the ruling Chinese Communist Party.

Hu added that he confirmed through his sources that the photos posted on Twitter by a journalist working for the Chinese state media, which allegedly showed Peng at home, reflect her “current situation”.

Reuters has not been able to verify the authenticity of these photos from independent sources.

Amid growing concerns about the international reputation of the tennis player, the Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) has threatened to withdraw the tournaments from China and the Men’s Tennis Association (ATP) has demanded clarification from the Chinese authorities.
