A canteen in the southwestern Chinese city of Chongqing collapsed today after an explosion that may have been caused by a gas leak that trapped many people, according to state media reports.
According to a CCTV report, initial estimates are that more than 20 people have been trapped.
The Chinese Ministry of Emergency Situations has sent a team to the scene of the blast in Chongqing’s Woolong district.
The local fire service sent 50 vehicles and about 260 rescuers to take part in the rescue efforts.
The official Xinhua news agency reported that “many people” had been injured.
The accident occurred shortly after noon local time.
