China: New visit of US official to Taipei

Another visit by an American official to Taiwan adds further tension to the already tense atmosphere between Taipei and Beijing.

It’s the Indiana governor who arrived in the island’s “capital” on Sunday — amid new Chinese military training schools on the strait that separates Taiwan from mainland China.

Tensions in the region have escalated since US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi paid a two-day visit to Taipei earlier this month.

It was followed, last week, by a visit by a group of American parliamentarians.

Indiana Gov. Eric Holcomb tweeted that he would also visit South Korea, while Taiwan’s presidential office said he would meet with President Tsai Ing-wen on Monday morning.

“I am excited to spend this week building new relationships, strengthening the longstanding, pivotal partnerships with Taiwan and South Korea,” Holcomb tweeted.

Meanwhile, twelve Chinese aircraft and five ships were spotted operating around Taiwan today.

This was announced by the island’s defense ministry, noting that five aircraft crossed the median line of the Taiwan Strait as Beijing continued military activities near the island.

China has been conducting drills near Taiwan, which it considers Chinese territory despite strong objections from the Taipei government, since the beginning of the month, following a visit to the island by US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi.
