China: Outbreaks exceeded the number of infections recorded in 2021

Authorities in China have so far reported more accidental cases of covid-19 this year than throughout 2021, as the highly contagious Omicron variant of the coronavirus has spread across the country.

In the past 24 hours, 1,337 domestic cases of covid-19 were detected in mainland China, the National Health Commission announced. At the same time, in the previous 24 hours, 906 new asymptomatic infections were recorded in the country.

More than 9,000 cases have been reported in the country so far, up from 8,378 in 2021, according to Reuters estimates.

Officials in Shenzhen, China’s Silicon Valley, have suspended public transport and asked residents to work from home, while also conducting mass diagnostic tests following the rise in cases.

Foxconn and Unimicron Technology Group, which supplies parts to Apple, have suspended operations.

“Foxconn’s operations in Shenzhen, China, have been suspended since March 14, in line with the local government’s new policy on covid-19,” it said in a statement.

In the city of Changchun in southeastern China, where a lockdown has been imposed, Toyota has suspended production.
