China has punished several local officials with downgrades or layoffs for falsifying economic data, the country’s statistics bureau said on Friday, as part of an effort to curb data fraud as the economy falters.
China’s National Bureau of Statistics found data breaches in 2020 and 2021 after carrying out inspections in several cities — Xingtai, Hebei Province; Jiaozuo, in Henan Province; and Bijie and Anshun in Guizhou Province,” the department said in a statement on its website.
Hebei authorities punished 45 employees in Xingtai after finding that some of their data on industrial production, fixed asset investment, wholesale and retail sales was “seriously inaccurate”.
Authorities in Henan have taken disciplinary and organizational action against 38 employees for data breaches, while Guizhou has given similar penalties to 22 employees, according to the province.
