China: President Xi to Visit Hong Kong for 25th Anniversary of US Transfer of Power

Chinese President Xi Jinping will visit Hong Kong for the 25th anniversary of the transfer of power from the United Kingdom to China, Xinhua news agency reported today.

This is President Xi Jinping’s first trip outside mainland China since January 2020, after the outbreak of the Covid-19 pandemic. The Chinese president will attend the swearing-in ceremony of the sixth government of Hong Kong.

From July 1, the new governor of Hong Kong will be John Lee, who succeeds Carrie Lam.

A former police officer, Li led the crackdown on pro-democracy protests in 2019. He has vowed to maintain order in Hong Kong under national security law, in line with China’s sovereign interests.

Hong Kong came under Chinese control on July 1, 1997, after 156 years as a British colony.
