China will make the maximum effort to perform “peaceful reunification” with Taiwan, but will take all the necessary measures to safeguard the Chinese territorial integrity, the country’s Foreign Ministry said on Monday (10).
The Chinese government claims Taiwan as its own territory, despite the objection of Taipei, Taiwanese capital.
Taiwanese President Lai Ching-Te says that only the people can decide their own future.
Last week, on the sidelines of Annual Meeting of the Parliament of China, Foreign Minister Wang Yi told reporters that Taiwan would never be a “country” and supporting “this independence” was to interfere with China’s internal affairs.
The country is “willing to do the most to fight for the perspective of peaceful reunification with the greatest sincerity,” said Mao Ning, a spokesman for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, when asked about Wang’s comments about Taiwan.
“At the same time, China will take all the necessary measures to safeguard national sovereignty and territorial integrity and will be resolutely opposed to Taiwan’s independence and external interference,” Mao continued.
In recent years, Beijing has increased military pressure against the island, including several rounds of war games, keeping alive the perspective of using the force to put Taiwan under his control.
The United States is the main gun supplier of the separatist island, even in the absence of formal diplomatic ties, but there is no defense treaty, unlike the case of Japan and South Korea.
According to Mao, there is a forecast for Americans to cease gun sales to Taiwan and interrupt all military contacts.
“Taiwan’s issue is the core of China’s central interests and the first insurmountable red line in Sino-American relations,” she warned.
