China, protests in the iPhone company where there is still the lockdown for Covid

There is a nation in the world where there are still continuous lockdowns and restrictions. There China has chosen zero tolerance: everything closes down in the first cases of Covid-19, but people can’t stand it anymore, also because many have had to remain closed in the factory where they were working or haven’t had the opportunity to go out for weeks at home even if they had no symptoms.

The case that started the latest protests is that of iPhone City, the giant Apple smartphone factory in Zhengzhou. There are 200,000 workers here. Many of them clashed with white-clad health guards and then with police in riot gear.

To tell the protest are videos circulating on the web with the workers leaving the factory dormitories. The protest arose precisely because the employees were forced to remain closed in the factory without the possibility of going out for the lockdown imposed by the presence of some cases of contagion.

Precisely because of the health restrictions there were no supplies and the hygienic conditions were not good. Companies choose to keep the workers inside to prevent them from being stuck at home in the event of a lockdown and therefore production stops as happened in the last two years with damage to the whole economy. However, the workers are exasperated by this life as prisoners.

At the end of October the factory-city, managed by the Taiwanese Foxconn, has seen employees flee after reports of positivity cases within it. They jumped the gates and left. In order not to interrupt production, especially of the iPhone14, retired ex-military men, farmers and administration personnel were hired. However, the use of external labor would have increased tensions in the factory. Putting the dynamic Zero Covid policy into practice to reduce the impact on economic growth as requested by the central committee is not an immediate and manageable thing.
