Beijing warned on Tuesday (19/7) that it would take “tough measures” if the head of the US House of Representatives Nancy Pelosi to visit Taiwan, following a report in the Financial Times according to which the American official will next month visit the island that the China considers its own territory.
Pelosi and her delegation will also visit Indonesia, Malaysia and Singapore and spend time in Hawaii at the headquarters of the US Indo-Pacific Command, according to the report. Pelosi’s office and the US State Department did not immediately respond to a Reuters request for comment. Her Foreign Ministry Taiwan stated that he “has not received any relevant information” about any visit.
Pelosi’s visit to Taiwan, as reported by the Athens News Agency, was postponed in April when she tested positive for COVID-19. At the time, China had said that a visit would seriously affect China-US relations.
Speaking in Beijing, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Zhao Lijian said a visit by Pelosi “would seriously undermine China’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.”
“If the US side stubbornly sticks to this course, China will definitely take decisive and strong measures to vigorously defend its national sovereignty and territorial integrity,” he said. “The US must bear full responsibility for all the consequences that will be caused by this.”
