China reports African swine fever outbreak on Hainan Island

China has reported an outbreak of African swine fever in a pig farm on the island of Hainan, in the south of the country, said on Tuesday (9) the World Organization for Animal Health (OIE), based in Paris.

African swine fever is harmless to humans, but often deadly to pigs.

The virus has affected pig production in China, the world’s biggest market, in recent years.

production record

China’s pork production in the third quarter reached its highest level in three years, according to official data released in October. The record is a reflection of the thousands of large farms created last year to rebuild the country’s herd decimated by African swine fever.

Pork production between July and September was 12.02 million tonnes, an increase of 43% compared to the previous year, according to calculations by the Reuters based on official data – the highest since the third quarter of 2018, before the country felt the consequences of the swine fever epidemic.
