The first case of H3N8 avian influenza in humans was recorded by China, as the authorities announced on Tuesday, stressing, however, that the risk of spreading is small. A 4-year-old boy from Henan Province was found infected with the strain after he developed a fever and other symptoms on April 5, according to Reuters.
No close contact of the boy was infected with the virus, according to a statement from the National Health Commission of China. The child came in daily contact with chickens and crows raised at home, the announcement added.
The H3N8 strain has been found in the past in other parts of the world in horses, dogs, birds and seals, but H3N8 cases have never been reported in humans, the commission said.
The first evaluation showed that this variant is not highly contagious and that the risk of a large-scale epidemic is low.
Many different executives bird flu exist in China and some occasionally infect humans, usually those working with poultry.
Last year, China reported the first case of H10N3 in humans.
