China said on Friday that an airship flying over the United States serves civil meteorological and other scientific purposes and regretted that it had strayed into US airspace.
US officials said on Thursday that a Chinese spy balloon had been flying over the country for a few days in what would have been a brazen act just days before a planned trip to Beijing by US Secretary of State Antony Blinken.
In a statement on Friday, China’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs also said it continues to maintain communications with the US to properly handle the unexpected situation.
“The airship is from China and is of a civilian nature, used for meteorological research and other scientific research. Due to the influence of the westerly winds and its limited controllability, the airship deviated from its intended course,” she said.
“China regrets that the airship was mistakenly diverted to the United States due to force majeure. China will continue to maintain communication with the US side to properly handle this accident,” he said.
