China accused the United States of “endangering” peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait after a US military reconnaissance and maritime patrol plane, P-8A Poseidon, flew over the region on Monday (27).
Beijing chafes at US military missions through the strait, most often by warships but occasionally by aircraft, saying China “has sovereignty, sovereign rights and jurisdiction” over the waterway. Taiwan and the United States dispute that it is an international waterway.
The Chinese People’s Liberation Army Eastern Theater Command said its forces closely monitored the aircraft, which is also used for anti-submarine missions, as it flew through the strait that separates China from Taiwan.
“Actions on the US side deliberately interfered and disrupted the regional situation and endangered the peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait. We are firmly opposed to this,” he said in a brief statement.
“Theater forces remain on high alert at all times and resolutely defend national sovereignty and territorial integrity.” The Pentagon did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
The United States has previously said such missions demonstrate the American commitment to a free and open Indo-Pacific.
Taiwan’s Defense Ministry, in its brief statement, said the aircraft flew in a southerly direction across the strait.
