China sees Lula as an “old friend” in this resumption of relations, evaluates professor

Relations between Brazil and China “are going through a new phase” in the midst of President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva’s trip to China, according to professor at the Normal University of Hunan Aline Tedeschi.

A CNN Radio she, who lives in the Asian country, said that the local media has recognized this stage with “greater optimism” and that Lula is treated as “an old friend” of the Chinese.

“This optimism surrounding the new government should guide this multilateral system”, said Aline, who sees the exchanges not only in quantitative terms, but also in qualitative terms.

Expectations from both the Chinese and Brazilian sides are that “more than 20 agreements will be closed with Lula’s visit”, in addition to joint communiqués on international policy.

Among the agreements, areas such as agribusiness, with innovation and technology, renewable energy and the possible negotiation for Brazil to enter the “belt and road”, the new silk road, are expected to be contemplated.

The researcher also argues that the initiative to use local currencies instead of the dollar for transactions is a “much faster and less costly alternative for transactions between Brazil and China.”

Aline Tedeschi pointed out that Lula is expected to discuss the war in Ukraine with Chinese president Xi Jinping.

However, she made the caveat that “Lula’s visit will not be to put pressure on China, so that it intercedes with Russian President Vladimir Putin about the invasion.”

At the same time, “it could be that this is a good time to establish a joint statement for Putin to consider putting progress in this regard on the debate table.”
