The view that China and USA they must pursue dialogue instead of confrontation and avoid mistakes like those made during the Cold WarWang Yi, a former foreign minister of the Asian country, expressed in his first remarks after being appointed as the head of the Communist Party’s foreign affairs office.
Wang was succeeded in the ministry on Friday by Qin Gang, China’s former ambassador to USAbut is expected to retain an important role in shaping the country’s foreign policy following his promotion in October to the Politburo of the Chinese Communist Party’s Central Committee.
In an article in the party’s official newspaper, Wang called on the major countries to “lead by example” in the face of the multiple challengesciting cooperation between China and Russia that strengthened during 2022.
“During the past year we have been relentlessly searching for the right way for the two great countries, China and the US, to get along well with each other”write down.
“The two countries should find a way to cooperate with mutual respect, peaceful coexistence and mutually beneficial cooperation and put China-US relations back on the right path of health and stability.”Wang added.
During Wang’s tenure as China’s foreign ministry, tensions between Beijing and Washington escalated over issues ranging from trade to Taiwan.
He emphasized in his article that Taiwan remains “at the center of China’s essential interests” and “the foundation” on which China’s political relationship with the US is built.
