China starts testing digital yuan at ATMs

The state-owned Chinese bank Agricultural Bank of China (ABC) has begun testing the work with national digital currency at ATMs in Shenzhen.

Some of ABC’s Shenzhen branches have received an upgrade to allow users to access the digital yuan. Bank customers through ATMs will be able to convert ordinary yuan into digital and vice versa.

Testing the digital yuan at ATMs was part of a second pilot program in Shenzhen, in which residents of the city received 200 digital yuan each to pay for goods and services.

The state bank also launched the Digital Yuan Innovation Laboratory, which develops new ways to use the state cryptocurrency.

Recall that in early January, photos of a hardware wallet for the digital yuan “leaked” to the Network. It is made in the form factor of a credit card and is equipped with an LCD screen, on which the details of the transaction are displayed.

Testing of a mobile wallet for national digital currency by ABC bank began back in April 2020.
