China may still consider providing military aid to Russia, US National Security Council spokesman John Kirby said on Friday.
“We don’t believe they took it off the table,” Kirby told Abby Phillip of the CNN noting that the government still doesn’t “believe they’ve made the decision to move forward.”
Kirby also said that F-16 fighters are not a “key part” of the agenda for US President Joe Biden’s meeting with German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, but that the two leaders will speak extensively about what Ukraine will do.
Asked about detained American Paul Whelan, Kirby said US Secretary of State Antony Blinken “absolutely” raised the matter to his Russian counterpart, Sergey Lavrov, despite opposing claims from Russia.
“Paul Whelan needs to be home with his family and his friends,” said Kirby. “We will continue working to free him and get him back home.”
