With the death of Windows Mobile at the end of 2019, Microsoft left the mobile ecosystem market. The company tried to make up for this by offering its services on the platforms it was trying to compete with, as well as introducing Android integration. But apparently, the company wants to offer Android and iOS users another attractive option for online search, shopping, payments, news and other services.
According to The Information, Microsoft is in the early stages of developing a super app that will take the company’s services to the next level by combining the Bing search engine, Teams and Outlook work apps, and other user services. Previously CEO Satya Nadela that expects an increase in revenue from Bing. Most likely, this should happen by increasing the advertising turnover and attracting more users to their mobile services.
The source says that Microsoft was inspired by the Chinese super app WeChat, the most famous service of this type. In China, more than a billion users use it to store their government documents and travel cards, order goods and food, rent housing and vehicles, perform banking transactions and communicate. The concept of a super app is popular in Asian countries – in South Korea, for example, KakaoTalk is widespread, which also provides access to payments and other digital services. Both services have a large reach of users in their countries, and therefore bring in huge profits.
It is not known how soon Microsoft will introduce its super app. However, given the ecosystem market in the US, where Apple and Google significantly dominate the mobile services market, it can be said that the company will face great difficulties in promoting a new product.
