Chinese authorities today imposed a lockdown in the northern Chinese city of Xi’an, which has a population of 13 million, due to a jump in Covid-19 cases, more than a month before the Beijing Winter Olympics.
Xi’an residents must “stay home unless there is an urgent need” to leave, local officials said in a statement, adding that one person in each household is allowed to go shopping “every two days”.
To prevent any spread of the virus, residents will have to stay at home from tomorrow, Thursday, at midnight (18:00 on Wednesday, Greek time), local authorities announced.
All “non-essential” businesses, with the exception of supermarkets and medical institutions, were ordered to close.
Xi’an is known for the famous buried army of terracotta warriors, which is located in the mausoleum of China’s first emperor.
The city had already significantly reduced travel and began conducting diagnostic tests on its entire population on Tuesday.
