China: The next governor of Hong Kong is going to Beijing

The next head of Hong Kong’s executive branch, John Lee, is expected to travel to Beijing today to meet with Chinese President Xi Jinping and confirm his appointment, about a month before taking office.

The 64-year-old former head of security in Hong Kong, who oversaw the crackdown on the anti-democracy movement, was appointed in early May by a small “electoral commission” loyal to Beijing.

During his four-day visit to China, Li, who was the sole candidate to succeed outgoing local government leader Kari Lam, is also expected to meet with senior Chinese officials, according to Hong Kong media.

Li is expected to meet with President Xi, who will have to approve the list of people who will form his team, according to the South China Morning Post.

Over the weekend, the future head of the executive branch will have to undergo diagnostic tests and be quarantined as part of anti-Covid measures in China.

John Lee will officially take office on July 1, the 25th anniversary of Hong Kong’s return from the UK to China.

So far, President Xi’s presence in Hong Kong has not been confirmed for these two events. His arrival will be the Chinese president’s first trip outside mainland China since the start of the pandemic.
