Chinese Premier Li Keqiang said today that the situation in Ukraine was “really worrying” and added that he considered it important to support the Moscow-Kiev talks to declare a ceasefire.
Mr Lee, speaking at a news conference after parliament’s annual plenary session, declined to comment immediately after being asked by Beijing if Beijing would continue to denounce Russia and if and to what extent China will continue to provide financial support to Moscow, which is facing a barrage of Western sanctions.
“We sincerely hope the situation calms down and peace returns as soon as possible,” he said. “We support and encourage all efforts that can contribute to the peaceful resolution of the crisis,” he added.
He called for restraint and to avoid the risk of the tension escalating even further and getting out of control.
However, it has spoken out against international sanctions against Russia. The sanctions, he said, “will hurt the recovery of the world economy. It is not in anyone’s interest.”
The Chinese government has so far refrained from condemning the Russian military intervention in Ukraine; it refuses to even use the term “invasion”. He also publicly opposes sanctions against Moscow.
