China to increase regulation on companies with digital influencers

China will “fix” companies with digital influencers as part of a “cyberspace cleanup” plan announced on Thursday by the industry regulator.

The campaign’s focus will include rectifying multi-channel network (MCN) agencies, short videos and live broadcasts, as well as quelling internet rumors, according to Sheng Ronghua, deputy director of the Cyberspace Administration of China (CAC).

The decision highlights CAC’s growing concern about the companies behind much of the viral content consumed on Chinese social media.

MCN companies are behind 40% of accounts with more than 10 million followers on China’s biggest social media platforms, according to Zhang Yongjun, an official at the institution, who said future measures will target companies whose influencers produce content deemed harmful. the society.

Among the actions will be tougher punishments, a ban on producing child influencers and posting homogenous content online in droves. The regulator will also require influencer agencies to be clearly displayed on their accounts and create a whistleblower channel.

“Our regulation doesn’t mean we want to ‘kill’ them, but we expect them to be under the law and standardized,” said Zhang, who added that the CAC will soon release rules for content production.

As a result of 15 operations launched by the agency last year to create a cyberspace that “reflects China’s socialist values”, 1.34 billion accounts, 22 million pieces of online information and more than 7,200 live streams and websites were removed, he said. the regulator.

In 2021, the CAC also verified algorithms from more than 300 news media companies, e-commerce platforms and video platforms, which it saw as an experiment that laid the groundwork for further measures this year.
