Chinese President Xi Jinping called for a political resolution to the Ukraine crisis in a phone call with French President Emmanuel Macron on Wednesday, Chinese state media reported.
Xi encouraged all parties involved to resolve the crisis through dialogue and the use of multilateral platforms, including the Normandy format, an informal group created by French, German, Russian and Ukrainian diplomats in 2014.
The Chinese leader also told Macron that China would support more French banks and financial institutions to participate in the Yuan cross-border payment system, the state-owned company said. Both leaders also agreed to deepen cooperation between the airlines.
Understand the reasons for the tension between the two countries
Tensions between Ukraine and Russia are at their highest in recent years. The Russian army has assembled more than 130,000 troops near the Ukrainian border in recent weeks.
The United States and other member countries of NATO (North Atlantic Treaty Organization) accuse Russia of planning an attack against Ukraine and point to a growing accumulation of military forces on the borders.
The Russians, for their part, deny that there will be an invasion, but ask that NATO distance itself from Ukraine and its intentions to make the border country one of its members in Europe.
On Tuesday, some troops in Russia’s military districts adjacent to Ukraine returned to their bases after completing exercises, the Russian Defense Ministry reported.
