Chinese diplomacy today described US democracy as a “weapon of mass destruction” following a two-day digital democracy summit hosted by Joe Biden to form a front of countries that share the same values ​​of authoritarian regimes.

“Democracy has long been used as a ‘weapon of mass destruction’ used by the United States to interfere in the interior of other countries,” a Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman said in a statement on his website, accusing Washington of “inciting ‘revolutions of different colors’ abroad “.

China was left out of the two-day digital conference, as were other countries, such as Russia and Hungary. Beijing has accused the White House resident of seeking to fuel ideological divisions that are a legacy of the Cold War.

For the Chinese diplomat, the summit was organized to “crystallize the lines of ideological prejudice, to instrumentalize democracy and turn it into a weapon”, to cultivate “divisions” and to “incite conflict”.

China, for its part, is committed to “resolutely resisting and opposing all forms of pseudo-democracy.”

Moving against the current of this summit, Beijing escalated its propaganda campaign, pounding the democracy of the Western press, according to which it was corrupt and failed.

In a White Paper published last week aimed at strengthening its legitimacy, the communist regime, which its opponents accuse of becoming increasingly authoritarian under President Xi Jinping, praises its own model, “full popular democracy”.

Tensions between the world’s two most powerful powers have continued to escalate in recent years, with trade and technology rivalry, human rights, the issue of Uighur treatment in Xinjiang, and China’s relationship with Taiwan.

The US Treasury Department on Friday fined two senior Chinese officials for human rights abuses in Xinjiang and blacklisted Chinese artificial intelligence company SenseTime over its use of biometric technology. of the Uighurs.

Taiwan – an island that has its own government but is always considered by Beijing to be an insurgent Chinese province destined to be reunited with the mainland by force if needed – was invited to the summit, which the Chinese leadership took as a clear challenge. .

However, Beijing claimed a victory during the summit hosted by Joe Biden: Nicaragua announced that it was severing diplomatic relations with Taiwan and recognizing China.

With this development, Taiwan counts only 14 diplomatic allies. Reacting, the State Department urged “all countries for which democratic institutions matter” to “expand” their relationship with Taipei.
