China warned the United States on Monday (2) not to cross the “red line” on Taiwan and asked it to stop supporting separatist forces for the island’s independence.
The comments made on Monday by Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lin Jian came after Taiwan President Lai Ching-te visited Hawaii on Saturday (30).
Lai was making a two-day trip to Hawaii as part of a weeklong visit to allies in the Pacific. China condemned the trip, saying it opposes any transit stops by Taiwanese leaders on American soil.
Lai also held a 20-minute call with former US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi on Sunday, during which they discussed China’s military threats, Taiwan’s official Central News Agency reported. .
China claims democratically-ruled Taiwan as its own territory, a position Lai and his government reject, and has stepped up its military activities around the island over the past five years.
On Friday (29), the United States Department of State approved the potential sale of spare parts for F-16 jets and radars to Taiwan for an estimated value of US$385 million, the Pentagon said.
