At least 16 people were killed and 10 others were injured in a gas explosion in southwest China on Friday, according to the country’s Emergency Management Ministry.
The ministry said a local government office cafeteria in Chongqing City collapsed after a suspected gas leak and explosion, arresting a total of 26 people.
More than 600 rescuers participated in the rescue mission and authorities are investigating the cause of the explosion.
China has been hit by a series of gas explosions in recent years. In October, four people died and more than 30 were injured when an explosion hit a restaurant in the northeastern city of Shenyang.
In June, at least 12 people died in a massive explosion in central Hubei province.
