China’s population is shrinking

China’s population growth rate is slowing significantly and is on track to shrink until at least 2025, the state-run Global Times newspaper reported, citing a health official.

Fertility data released in Beijing on Sunday showed that the number of births in 2021 was the lowest in decades in several provinces.

The number of births in the central province of Hunan fell below the 500,000 mark for the first time in nearly sixty years, the Global Times reported. The southern province of Guangdong alone recorded more than 1 million births, according to the same source.

The Chinese government is struggling to reverse the country’s rapidly shrinking population growth as more young people choose not to have children due to factors such as high costs or work pressure.

China’s population will shrink from 2021 to 2025, according to the report citing Yang Unzhuang, head of the population and family affairs department at the National Health Commission.

China’s law change last year, allowing couples to have a third child, doesn’t seem to have helped. Many women pointed out that this change was long overdue for them, while others highlighted the lack of job security and gender equality, especially in terms of pay and work rights.
