The Chinese and Russian Armed Forces organized and carried out the ninth joint air patrol in “relevant airspace” over the Sea of Japan this Friday (29), Chinese state broadcaster CCTV reported.
The military action is part of an annual cooperation plan between the countries, which has existed since 2019.
According to CCTV the air patrol aims to test and improve the joint training and operational capabilities of the two air forces.
Meanwhile, South Korea protested against allied countries, claiming that the air patrol was carried out without warning.
According to the South Korean military, fighter jets were launched after 11 Chinese and Russian military aircraft entered the country’s air defense zone (ADIZ).
When foreign aircraft enter an ADIZ they are required to identify themselves for security reasons. However, these zones do not refer to the territorial airspace of a sovereign state and often overlap with the ADIZs of other countries.
In July, the two militaries carried out a joint air patrol using nuclear-capable strategic bombing raids near Alaska, prompting the United States and Canada to launch fighter jets in response.
