Chinese courts start accepting blockchain evidence

The courts of the Chinese provinces of Sichuan and Inner Mongolia have allowed the use of evidence recorded using the blockchain.

The first precedents already exist. The website of the People’s Court of the Saikhan District of Hohhot, Inner Mongolia, reports that the judge recognized the blockchain contract as evidence in a disputed loan agreement case. This contract on the blockchain has been formally submitted as evidence.

In Sichuan, a free trade zone court used evidence stored on a blockchain network as evidence in a copyright infringement case. The plaintiff accused the defendant of stealing a piece of music and using it for commercial purposes. The court accepted the evidence and issued a verdict of copyright infringement. The defendant must pay compensation to the plaintiff in the amount of 20,000 yuan ($3,142).

Last August, the Guangzhou City Court launched a blockchain-based system to collect evidence. It allows “cross-examinations online” and speeds up the investigation.
