The Chinese expert on the new coronavirus, Wu Zongyu, who was on the front line in the fight against the COVID-19 pandemic, died today at the age of 60, the Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) announced. Wu Zunyu died in Beijing “after medical treatment for an illness that did not work,” the CDC, where he served as chief epidemiologist, said in a statement on its website.
State media, citing sources within the CDC, reported that Wu Zongyou died of pancreatic cancer. In accordance with the wishes of Wu Zongyu, who had asked to be buried in a close family circle, there will be no public ceremony, the CDC said. Wu Zunyou regularly appeared in public to justify them draconian measures which Beijing had received for the COVID-19 regarding restrictions, mass tests and quarantines, as reported by APE-MPE. These measures had initially allowed the spread of the new coronavirus to be halted, but then lost ground under the pressure of new variants of the virus which spread rapidly and were abolished at the end of 2022 after mass protests.
Born in 1963, Wu Zunyu had worked at a disease prevention center in his hometown of Anhui province before earning a doctorate in infectious diseases at the University of California (UCLA) in the US. Wu Zunyu was hired in 2005 at the Chinese Centers for Disease Control and Prevention where his acclaimed work on AIDS prevention allowed him to become the agency’s chief of infectious diseases. Since 2020 when China implemented its policy “zero COVID”Wu appeared regularly on state television, often in a plain gray suit and glasses, speaking softly about the need to bring the deadly virus under control.
