Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi arrived in Kabul today on his first visit to Afghanistan since the Taliban seized power in the country, an Islamist official said.
“The Chinese foreign minister has arrived in Kabul to meet with officials of the Islamic Emirate,” said Ahmad Yari, a government official.
Wang arrived in Kabul from Islamabad, where he attended a meeting of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation.
The visit comes a week before a conference scheduled to be held in Beijing with the participation of countries bordering Afghanistan, during which assistance to the new Taliban regime will be discussed.
China shares a 76-kilometer-high border with Afghanistan, but Beijing has long feared its neighbor would become a rearguard base for separatists and Islamist insurgents of the Uighur Muslim minority.
Since August 15, when the Taliban seized power in Afghanistan, China has been trying to maintain ties with the Islamists.
