Chinese institute advocates changing “Covid zero” policy to avoid stagnation

A research institute in China has issued a rare dissenting opinion, saying that the restrictions of the Communist Party’s harsh “Covid zero” policy must change to avoid “economic stagnation”.

In a report, research institute Anbound did not elaborate on possible changes, but said President Xi Jinping’s government needed to focus efforts to reverse the economic slowdown. It also highlights that the US, Europe and Japan are recovering economically, after easing measures to combat the disease.

“Preventing the risk of economic stagnation should be the priority task”, defended the institute.

Even small public displays of disagreement with official policy are virtually unheard of in a politically sensitive year when Xi, China’s most powerful leader since at least the 1980s, is expected to try to extend his tenure.

The report, dated Sunday (28), was released on the institute’s accounts on the WeChat messaging platform and on the microblog service. Sina Weibobut was deleted from both this Monday.

Anti-Covid restrictions are expected to remain in place until at least after the Communist Party meeting in October and November, during which Xi will likely break with tradition and give himself a third five-year term in the presidency.

Economists warn China needs to boost economic growth, which slowed to 2.5% in the first half of 2022, representing less than half of the official 5.5% target set for this year, after Shanghai and other industrial hubs ground to a halt. , starting in March, as a way to avoid outbreaks of the disease.
