Taiwan's Defense Ministry said this Saturday (25) that 46 Chinese military planes crossed the Taiwan Strait. The action took place this Friday (24) during China's military exercises around the island.
Taiwanese authorities, however, did not release any further details about the Chinese operation.
This week, tensions rose again in Asia after China launched military exercises around the island.
The action comes days after Taiwan's new president, Lai Ching-te, took office. During his inauguration speech, the pro-independence leader defended democratic values.
The Chinese government claims that the military operation is a “punishment” for separatist acts.
The Chinese Communist Party claims Taiwan is part of its territory, despite never having controlled it, and has vowed to seize the island, if necessary, by force.
