The9 mining company from Shanghai signed an investment deal with partner KazDigital to build a large 100 MW data center in Kazakhstan to host ASIC miners.
Construction should be completed in the first quarter of next year. The project is divided into four phases. Within each phase, 25 MW centers will be launched, with the first phase already completed. The9 sent 1,000 devices to Kazakhstan to test the farm. The equipment will be operated by a local partner.
Mining bans in China are forcing local miners to look for placement options overseas. The9 owns more than 35,000 legacy devices located in the Chinese provinces of Sichuan, Xinjiang, Qinghai, Gansu and Inner Mongolia. In addition, the company has purchased another 24,000 Antminer S19j ASIC miners from Bitmain – deliveries should begin in November.
Earlier, The9 signed an agreement with the Russian company Bitriver to place mining equipment with a total capacity of 15 MW in Russia. It seems that this capacity of the Chinese company is not enough, and it would be more profitable to build data centers from scratch in Kazakhstan.
