Chinese news channel records Russian tank explosion

The Chinese news channel Phoenix Television released this Wednesday (11) the record of the explosion of a Russian war tank. According to Phoenix TV, the incident took place last Friday (6), near the city of Mariupol, in southern Ukraine.

In the images it is possible to observe a T-72 tank, one of the most used by the Russian military, transiting a highway before impact. The road is just 6 km from the humanitarian corridors established in Mariupol, according to Phoenix TV.

The impact of the explosion is so great that the tank’s turret, which weighs about 12 tons, is thrown many meters into the air.

The effect on the tank’s turret is a problem with Russian forces already known to Western intelligence. T-72 tanks are constructed so that ammunition is stored in the lower part of the vehicle, below the occupants.

This makes them highly vulnerable, as even an indirect impact can start a chain reaction that explodes the entire ammunition stockpile of up to 40 rounds. The resulting shock wave could be enough to blow up the tank’s turret as high as a two-story building, as seen in the video.

The most modern western tanks store the ammunition more securely, in the upper part of the military vehicle.

The defect has been known to Western forces for decades and is called the “jack-in-the-box effect” (also known as the “clown jump.” The T-72 is an old-fashioned tank, used since the 1980s .
