Chinese rival Tesla tests its autopilot on motorways over 3,000 km

Chinese electric vehicle startup XPeng reached an important milestone in the past month in developing its autonomous driving system known as Navigation Guided Pilot (NGP). The company’s autopilot works in conjunction with the Xpilot system, which integrates all driver assistance functions, and corresponds to the second level of autonomy on the SAE scale (the driver must still be ready to take control). However, as recent large-scale tests of the XPeng autopilot have shown, there are very few scenarios when you have to take control of a car.

In March, XPeng invited journalists, experts and enthusiasts to take part in testing the NGP system installed in XPeng P7 vehicles. For this, a rather difficult route for electric vehicles was chosen between Guangzhou and Beijing with a length of 3,675 km. Its complexity lies in the fact that it covers more than 3,000 km of motorways on which key NGP functions were tested, including road entry and exit, driving in the lane, overtaking and adjusting the speed limit.

The expedition departed from Guangzhou on March 19 and arrived in Beijing a week later. During the trip, the NGP was used for about 2,930 kilometers, and after analyzing the results of the autopilot, it was found that the autonomous driving system required an average of 0.71 interventions per 100 kilometers. Among other interesting data, it is worth noting a high level of successful maneuvers when changing lanes and overtaking (94.41%), when exiting and exiting a motorway (92.76%), as well as when driving in tunnels (94.45%) …

NGP relies on a sensor array of 14 cameras, 5 millimeter-wave radars and 12 ultrasonic sensors, as well as GPS navigation data and high-definition maps. All data is processed by the NVIDIA Drive Xavier hardware platform.

The XPeng P7, which was used in the tests, is an electric sedan that debuted at Auto Shanghai 2019. It is equipped with an 80.9 kWh battery, providing a range of 706 km according to the NEDC standard. The all-wheel drive version of the car is equipped with two electric motors with a total power of about 430 hp. XPeng also has a G3 crossover and a smaller P5 sedan. The NGP autonomous driving system is already being rolled out to the company’s vehicles via over-the-air software updates.
