Chinese Scientists Capture The Crown Of The Sun: It Owes Its Name To The Coronavirus – Photo

Chinese scientists have captured the Sun’s crown using a proprietary coronagraph. This was reported by the press service of the Yunnan Observatory of the Chinese Academy of Sciences.

The corona is the thin outer layer of the Sun, which earlier scientists could only observe during a solar eclipse, when the Moon overlaps the central bright part of the star, Chinese astronomers explain. The coronagraph mimics this natural phenomenon by using a circular “mask” inside the telescope to block out bright sunlight.

The US Centers for Infectious Disease Control and Prevention, the CDC, notes that coronaviruses are named after the solar corona. This is due to the structure of the virus, the spike proteins of which resemble the sun’s crown.

In the Yunnan Observatory, they write that during the research, the coronagraph was installed on a mountain 4800 meters high in the Tibetan Autonomous Region. Chinese scientists see this as a good start for developing a larger coronagraph.

In August and September of this year, it is planned to install a coronagraph on a balloon, which will be located at an altitude of 20 to 100 km from the earth to observe and study the structure of the magnetic field and the distribution of plasma in the solar corona.
