The Chinese spy balloon that flew over the United States earlier this year used American technology to collect audiovisual information.
The Wall Street Journal reported Wednesday, citing preliminary findings from an investigation, that analysis by U.S. defense and intelligence agencies found the balloon was carrying commercially available American equipment, along with more specialized Chinese sensors and other equipment. to collect photographs, videos and other information.
The report noted that the findings support the conclusion that the craft was designed for espionage rather than weather monitoring, as China has claimed.
However, the WSJ reported that the balloon did not appear to send data from its eight-day pass over Alaska, over Canada and some other US states back to China.
The White House and the Federal Bureau of Investigation did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
In February, the US shot down the balloon, which had flown over sensitive military sites, triggering a diplomatic crisis.
