Chinese video card MTT S80 fell into the hands of reviewers: it has terrible drivers, but you can play

Two days ago, on November 16, the Chinese video card MTT S80 from the local manufacturer Moore Threads went on sale, giving journalists and reviewers the opportunity to test the real capabilities of the new product. Naturally, so far the reviews come exclusively from Chinese authors and publications, since it will not be possible to buy a video card outside the Celestial Empire, and it will reach Europe or the USA on the “gray” market only in two to three weeks. And although “on paper” the performance of the video card should be quite high, in reality, enthusiasts note simply terrible drivers that cannot demonstrate this performance.

It is worth recalling that the performance of the MTT S80 processor is based on Chunxiao’s own graphics chip, which is developed according to its own architecture and manufactured using a 7 nanometer process technology. This graphics chip operates at a frequency of 1.8 GHz and is equipped with 4096 MUSA cores (CUDA analogue from NVIDIA) with 128 tensor cores. Also, the video card is equipped with a built-in 16 GB GDDR6 video memory with a data transfer rate of 14 Gb / s per contact with a 256-bit bus (448 GB / s is obtained). Judging by the characteristics and theoretical computing power, this video card should be more powerful than the RTX 3060 – the MTT S80 journalists compared it with it.

Unfortunately, in synthetic tests, the Chinese video card showed simply terrible performance – it is three to seven times inferior to the RTX 3060. This is an impressive lag, which simply should not be with such characteristics. Journalists note that they could understand the lag of 15-20% from the RTX 3060, but when the difference is at least twofold in synthetics, you have to focus on the fact that the video card drivers are simply not optimized for this software. Probably, the product developers simply did not optimize drivers for synthetic tests, so the results are simply devastating – if you look only at benchmarks, then the MTT S80 is somewhere on the same level with the GTX 1050 in terms of performance, maybe a little higher.

In addition, it is worth recalling that at the moment a Chinese-made video card works exclusively with DirectX 9, while DirectX 11 should be implemented later (no one names the exact dates). And, of course, the developers of the video card themselves note the fact that their new product is optimized exclusively for thirteen video games.

List of supported projects

  1. League of Legends.
  2. crossfire.
  3. QQ Speed.
  4. QQ dance.
  5. Fantasy Westward Journey.
  6. The Great Heroes.
  7. Audition.
  8. running kart.
  9. Diablo 3 (32-bit version).
  10. Ultimate Street Fighter IV.
  11. Siege.
  12. my world.
  13. Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit 3.

The makers of the graphics card claim that the MTT S80 will work just fine with these games, plus there are 60 more video games that should also run. These video games have not yet received optimization for the capabilities of the video card, but they will work – with frame rate drops, possible graphic artifacts and other troubles. For example, the shooter Counter-Strike: Global Offensive, which cannot boast of optimization, averages 213 FPS at medium graphics settings and 73 FPS at maximum settings in Full HD.

In League of Legends, we managed to get 144 FPS, in Crossfire the frame rate reached 180 FPS, and in Diablo 3 – 100 FPS. Accordingly, some projects can already be played on this video card, even with terrible driver optimization, but whether the situation will improve and how things are with AAA projects are questions that have not yet been answered.
