Chip shortage hits Nintendo’s hardware development

A Nintendo said on Friday (5) that a global shortage of chips, which forced it to reduce in line with sales expectations of its Switch device, is also hitting hardware development.

“The semiconductor situation is having some effect on hardware development,” Ko Shiota, a Nintendo executive, who heads the development team, told an analyst. “We are looking to replace components and tweak designs to try to reduce the impact,” he added.

The comments come a day after company president Shuntaro Furukawa said he saw no sign that a shortage of chips was slowing, as a Nintendo cut its Switch sales forecast for the entire year.

The Kyoto-based company faces rivals with large financial resources such as Microsoft, which are expanding streaming services and cloud gaming.

Nintendo declined to comment on plans for next-gen hardware, but referred to a “next hardware game system with integrated software.”
