Chlorophyll (and other remedies) for pimples. Will it really be effective?

Chlorophyll it is the quintessence of plants. In short, captures the energy of the sun, transforming it into chemical energy and, through the process of photosynthesis, in turn transforms the carbon dioxide absorbed from the air into sugars and carbohydrates, to nourish the plants themselves. And according to Generation Z, now beauty know-it-all on Instagram and TikTok, it’s good for our skin too. There are celebrities, in fact, from Alessandra Ambrosio a Dakota Johnson, gives Bella Hadid a Jennifer Lopez, who have been drinking green juice every day for years, to oxygenate and hydrate the skin from the inside.

This means that the skin gets rid of impurities and harmful substances more easily, because chlorophyll – contained in all green vegetables – is an excellent ally to remove toxins from the body. This natural ingredient, with an intense green color, is a precious source of vitamins A, C, E and K which, on the beauty side, stimulates the production of collagen in the skin, makes it radiant and protects it from UV rays, also reducing the skin aging. On TikTok, today, it is boom: according to many stars of the platform, in fact, it would be a panacea to counteract pimples and typical acne blemishes. But will it be entirely true? We asked this and other explanations from Benedetta Salsi, dermatologist and aesthetic doctor from Reggio Emilia.

On TikTok chlorophyll goes crazy, a right remedy or not?
«Today it seems that on social media everyone is improvising as experts. Let us remember, however, that acne is a real pathology, and as such it must be treated by a specialist in dermatology. And from here to say that chlorophyll cures acne, I would take it easy. The celebrities, always in search of the elixir of eternal youth, have also included food supplements in their beauty routine, including chlorophyll, which seem to have beneficial effects on the liver, intestine and immune system, and consequently on the skin, with a detox effect. But be careful, chlorophyll is also photosensitizing because it contains mineral salts, vitamins and antioxidants. We find chlorophyll extracts in supplements, but also as excipients in gels, ointments and sprays. A correct dosage of chlorophyll supplements is between 200 and 300 mg per day, divided into 3 doses ».

What are the most effective natural methods to combat pimples?
«Of course, adopt a correct beauty routine that includes daily face cleansing and the use of sebum-regulating creams. Among the natural substances we can include the essential oil of tea tree, or tea tree, for its antibacterial action. Burdock has astringent and soothing properties, clay is astringent and purifying, sage and lavender are excellent sebum regulators ».

Side creams and treatments, however, for those with acne?
«Anyone who suffers from acne will have to treat it with both topical and systemic drugs, based on active pharmacological ingredients such as antibiotics, retinoids, antimicrobials, keratolytics, and hormonal therapies. Among the dermatological treatments we have a wide range ranging from chemical peels based on salicylic acid, with an astringent and healing effect, to trichloroacetic, to treat post acne scars, up to dermabrasion, with fractional CO2 laser to treat scarring, and cool peel, a less invasive and effective treatment even on active acne. As well as the fractional radiofrequency microneedling, to treat acne in its active phase, and the famous carbon peel, which is done by first applying a carbon mask which is then removed with the q-switched laser with effect on dilated pores and anti-inflammatory. The latest innovation is the Accure laser, capable of resolving acne by 90%, because it can target and interact selectively with the sebaceous glands until they disappear, while safeguarding the epidermis ».

What not to do when faced with one (or more) pimple?
«Never crush it. Pimples do not touch and do not scratch. Hands are never clean, so touching it inflames even more, in addition to the risk that it will leave its mark ».
